Climate Change Leadership Awards (CCLA)

Inaugural government agency climate change award

Extensive interest from local government in previous years has motivated the Climate Change Leadership Awards (CCLA) to this year open a Local Municipality sector.
The new sector, which falls under the overall Private Sector banner, is specifically for government agencies that measure, report, and engages the community on their carbon emissions.

“The widespread awareness of the awards has encouraged growing participation from all sectors of the South African economy and particularly public service,” says Jeunesse Park, founder of the CCLA and of Food & Trees for Africa. “Government agencies recognise the importance of protecting and nurturing our environment by taking the lead through positive, voluntary action to combat global warming.”The prizes in the Private Sector category are a trophy, a first edition stamp, media coverage on Talk Radio 702 and Cape Talk 567, coverage on the CCLA website, inclusion in media press releases, and an invitation to the CCLA 2012 tree planting for carbon offset event as well as acknowledgement as a climate change leader.

The cost of ignoring global warming, warns Park, will be devastating and measured in lives, infrastructure and environmental destruction with the concomitant pressure applied to a ravaged economy and there is growing awareness amongst government agencies.

Entries will be judged by a panel according to strategic commitment, disclosure, performance, advocacy and influence. Interested agencies can check the fullcriteria at www.ccla.co.za and also submit their entries online.

Although this is the first year that the CCLA includes a specific government category it is the third year of the awards. Last year saw the number of entries triple.
The new Local Municipality sector under the Private Sector category fits inalongside Agriculture and Food; Energy, Minerals, Industrial; Financial Services; Corporate Services; Retail; and SME.
