Facilitating communication
Local government is arguably the most important level of government for the ordinary masses – citizens – of the country. It is from this level of government that the ordinary citizen expects to receive the most basic of services that he or she needs to lead a dignified life. This includes services such as basic sanitation, clean water and electricity, dependable public transport and/or safe roads.
As experience has shown over time, local government is the first line of defence when disaster strikes – be it floods, fire, storms or earthquakes.
It is in the self-interest of all members of society, businesses, institutions and interest groups to make whatever contribution they can in order to assist the effective functioning of local authorities.
Earlier this year, we had the general municipal elections, and many of the key functionaries in cities and towns across the country changed. In addition, there have been structural adaptations in certain regions.
In some instances, the power has changed hands between political parties. Now is the time for political interest firstly to take a back seat as everyone works together for the better functioning of our local communities. And key to this better functioning is communication between stakeholders.
In this edition of Service magazine, we try to contribute to the facilitation of communication between different stakeholders and for those who feel they have something to offer local authorities.
We have compiled a basic directory within the magazine, containing the contact details of the key role-players in each municipality of South Africa.
It was not easy in all instances to acquire the information or to find someone at each municipality to verify the available information. We have, however, done our best to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible.
