Editor's note
In this edition, we place special focus on transport: not only because October is Transport Month, but also because transport plays such a critical role in the economy and the quality of life in our urban centres.
No economy, country or city can prosper and develop without a sufficiently developed transport infrastructure.
For some years now, South Africa’s transport networks of both road and rail have not been a top priority; and it is showing in many areas: from the condition of roads, unacceptable and counterproductive congestion during peak hours, to the fact that the Western Cape is considering the renting of rolling stock from abroad.
It first needs to be said that it would be oversimplification and even grossly unfair to ascribed this to neglect or incompetence. It should be remembered that in 1994, there were – and still are, in some instances – backlogs in many of our cities’ peripheral areas due to the apartheid construct on society and special planning.
To not have given first priority to dealing with those backlogs, would have been suicidal for us as a country.
It should, however, at this point be recognised that it would be as suicidal to ignore the fact that much of our infrastructure has reached the point where major investment could require us in the longer run to do wholesale replacement.
From that angle, the Fifa Soccer World Cup was an important opportunity, generally well used to get a degree of momentum going in the upgrading of our transport- and other infrastructure.
It is critically important that we now build on this momentum.
This is not merely for convenience sake, but vitally important for economic growth, improvement of the environment and the life experience of South African citizens.
