The debate on what needs to be done about global warming and climate change, if anything at all, has been heating up considerably over the last few weeks in the build-up to the United Nations climate summit to be held in Copenhagen from 7 to 18 December. If conflicting claims have left you confused, you are probably closer to understanding the complexity of it all. World leaders seem to be heading for some form of consensus on what can be done, which in practical terms would probably mean very little.

Zuma administration

No need to be surprised

All roads lead to Polokwane

Many commentators have reacted with surprise during recent months over some of the policy moves from the Zuma-led administration. Closer scrutiny, however, has shown that there is no need for surprise - a checklist of what was to be expected was supplied by the African National Congress at its national congress in December 2007 in Polokwane. Government moves have become quite predictable.

The Zuma administration seems to be following this checklist so diligently, that the informed observer should be able to stay fairly well prepared to what is coming.

Cementing growth

After an extremely strong 2007, during which expectations in both the civil engineering industry and cement supply sector was surpassed, building confidence fell sharply in the first quarter of 2008 as demand in both the residential and nonresidential sectors continued to weaken.
