The eThekwini Municipality raked in three awards in the categories of Best Implemented IDP, Most Innovative Infrastructure Award for Sanitation Project and the Best Metropolitan Municipality in KZN at the Municipal Excellence Awards ceremony held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC).

MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, said the purpose of the awards is to inspire innovation and improve service delivery in municipalities. “Ultimately we are one government and we all work for one public and therefore we need to work together. The aim is to use the winning municipalities as models of study for other municipalities in order to improve service delivery in our province.”

eThekwini Mayor, James Nxumalo, said they are happy to be recognised for the hard work that they do.

“These awards are once more affirming our collective responsibility as public representatives that we are entrusted to lead and serve our people with honesty, humbleness and respect.

“These awards serve as a confirmation that our hard work in serving our people is not in vain. We acknowledge that there is still a lot more that needs to be done in order to improve the lives of our citizens but in the same breath, we have to take stock of what has been achieved,” added Nxumalo.

City Manager, Sibusiso Sithole, said “This is a sign that as a municipality we are on the right track in terms of service delivery. The Most Innovative Infrastructure Award for the Sanitation Project that we have rolled out in informal settlements and transit camps is another accolade we pride ourselves with because it talks to issues that are related to human dignity.

“Our main target for next year’s awards is that of a clean audit. We are working around the clock in order to ensure that we achieve this feat in the shortest time possible,” Sithole concluded.
