The Community Services Directorship at Knysna Municipality has been vacant since November last year when the municipality’s contract with Charl Botha had ended.

Dawie Adonis, who has been the manager integrated human settlements at the Knysna Municipality before this has been appointed to the position of director for cmmunity services.

Managers have been acting in this position until this appointment, which is effective from today.

Municipal manager, Lauren Waring, said Adonis had nearly 30 years’ experience in local government and had held senior positions in five different municipalities, having started his career in local government at the Malmesbury Municipality in 1984, where he was born.

“His hands-on approach and significant successes in one of the most complicated sections of government, human settlements, make him the ideal person to head the community services directorate.

"This directorate finds itself providing for a range of very different services, from waste removal and law enforcement to libraries and sports facilities.

"The municipality welcomes Adonis’ knowledge and experience across the different demands of this job as well as his proven leadership skills and exceptional insight into community issues and needs,” said Waring.

In addition to managing the roll-out of Knysna’s human settlements programme over the past six years, his management experience includes being the acting municipal manager of Theewaterskloof Municipality, town secretary of Caledon Municipality and director corporate services at Theewaterskloof Municipality.

Adonis said his commitment to excellent and effective service delivery would be a priority.

“I will do an organisational analysis of the directorate as soon as I commence my new position and will develop a strategic service delivery plan that will work towards improved service delivery and efficiency.

"There will also be an increased focus on youth development and social upliftment through skills development programmes.”

Adonis will assist the integrated human settlements department until the vacancy for manager human settlements has been filled to ensure the smooth continuity of a number of critical projects.
