Airport road soon to be renamed

Renaming the R24 after struggle stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu is nearing completion

The R24 is to be named after anti-apartheid activist Albertina Sisulu

On the City of Johannesburg’s side, the streets that have been affected include Allum Extension, Broadway Extension, Kitchener Avenue; Buzuidenhout Avenue; Market Street, Main Road, Central Road, Paarlshoop Street, Deville Street, Newclare Road, Maraisburg Road, 10th Road, Lola Street, Kathleen Street, Hamberg Road, Hoofd Street and Main Reef Road. The streets run through suburbs such as Bruma, Judith Paarl, Bezuidenhout Valley, Kensington, De Wetshof Extension 1 and 2, Fairview, Industrial and Industrial Extension 1, Johannesburg CBD, Mayfair and Mayfair West.

Nthatisi Madingoane, the City of Joburg's deputy communications director, said the process to rename the road should be completed by the end of this month.
He said the renaming of the R24 after Ma Sisulu, the highly respected anti-apartheid and adored community leader who died two years ago, was desirable to promote the goodwill of people in the new South Africa. He said this was a fitting honour to bestow on Ma Sisulu, given the contribution she made in the ushering of democracy in this country.
Ma Sisulu was a political activist and nurse and one of the most important leaders of anti-apartheid struggle. Often referred to as the “Mother of the Nation”, Ma Sisulu acted on human rights ideals throughout her life, assisted by her husband and fellow activist, Walter Sisulu, who died in 2003.
The renaming, being implemented through a phased-in process, is in line with the City of Joburg’s policy on the naming and renaming of streets and other public places.
Public notices were published in various newspapers in November 2008, inviting comments from all interested and affected parties. Community members were afforded 28 days to submit comment on the renaming exercise.
