The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games are upon us once again. Team eThekwini is gearing itself for yet another exciting tournament where young athletes will get the opportunity to showcase their talent.

The teams have all started their training sessions and they are scheduled as follows: soccer, Tuesdays and Thursdays; basketball and netball, Sundays at Hoypark Sports Ground. On Fridays the cricket team practices at the Sahara Kingsmead Stadium, while swimming is taking place at Kingspark Swimming Pool.

As part of the preparations, the team will stay at the Athlete's Village, which will be set up at King Edward High School in Matatiele. To boost morale and empower them, the athletes will enjoy team building exercises and be taught leadership and life skills such as professionalism, integrity and athletic discipline.

“The preparations for the upcoming tournament are going very well and we are confident that our team will maintain our standards of being the overall winners of the tournament,” said the Acting Head of Sports and Recreation Development, Sandra Khathi. She added that the department has opted for a camp set-up so that the athletes could get a feel for the outdoors and enjoy other activities that are part of the department’s social cohesion programme.

The SALGA Games 2013 will be hosted from 6 to 9 December 2013 by the Sisonke District Municipality. The municipality will participate in 15 sport codes including netball, athletics, basketball, boxing, cricket, indigenous games, golf, karate, rugby, tennis, table tennis, dance, volleyball and soccer.
